Your county attorney is the legal advisor and chief law officer for your county. The County Attorney does:

  • Prosecute all violations of state criminal laws and county ordinances
  • Provide legal advice to the Board of Supervisors and county and township officers concerning county matters
  • Represent and defend the state, county and its officers related cases.
  • Recovers all monies (debts, fines, penalties, etc.) owing to the state or county.
  • Present all mental health commitment proceedings and delinquency and child in need of assistance cases. There are both fulltime and part-time County Attorneys in Iowa. Roughly two-thirds of all County Attorneys are part-time and may handle private legal work in addition to their official duties.

Your County Attorney in his or her official capacity, does not:

  • Give legal advice to or represent private groups or persons
  • File lawsuits for private persons or defend them against lawsuits, including actions for dissolution of marriage.
  • Prepare wills, deeds, or other legal documents.

IOWA ORGANIZATION FOR VICTIM ASSISTANCE

The Iowa Organization for Victim Assistance (IOVA) is a support organization for victims, survivors, witnesses, advocates, and professionals. IOVA’s mission is to improve Iowa’s responses to crime and victimization in every community.

IOVA pursues awareness of and support for crime victims’ rights in Iowa by:

  • Advocating for short and long term changes in the criminal justice system to better meet the needs of victims
  • Educating professionals to provide more sensitive services to victims and witnesses
  • Providing a forum for crime victims and witnesses to voice their concerns and grievances.

Ways to get involved include speaking with groups of victim service providers or prison inmates, working with the legislature to make much needed changes and participating in other IOVA projects.
